Portsmouth / Southampton

When we arrived back in England at Dover, we were supposed to pick up a rental car. It was Sunday, however, and establishments like Hertz are normally closed on Sunday. We had made arrangements for the office to be open, but no one was there. Since it was already 4 pm, we took a train back to London, then out to Southampton where we were met by Brian Lucas. Brian had raised a big fuss and got us a car from the Hertz Southampton office.

I have no pictures of Southampton, but many of Portsmouth, a 20 minute drive away. I should have taken pictures of our main Southampton event, when we went walking to look for a place to eat dinner, and in a pub a block away from Brian's house we were roped into playing a trivia game at the pub. We were doing fairly well until two categories which were mostly British put us into last place. We were given a tin of cookies for being good sports. We had a lot of fun.

At Portsmouth, we visited two ships: HMS Victory, Lord Nelson's flagship, and HMS Warrior, and 1860's vintage combination sail, steam ship which used iron for the hull around the area where the guns were. Since there are lots of pictures of these two ships, I have made them sub pages of this one.

However, I do have one picture to put on this one. On the walk in between the two ships, I came upon a group of torpedoes out for display:

What caught my attention was the propeller design. Note that there are two propeller blade groups, one oriented in the opposite direction from the other. If anyone can explain this, please e.mail me, don@snowedunder.com.
