Day 3 - Chamonix to  Les Contamines

This hike is an alteration from the itinerary as the tram had not yet started for the summer. We did this trip at the end of mud season for Chamonix.  We took a van ride up to the bottom of another ski area, and hiked up to a "pass" where the bottom of the "Tramway du Mt. Blanc" (a cog railroad). Up to this point it had been partly cloudy, but as we started down, the rain began.   Even though it was not steep going down, we were last. This turned into a benefit as the bridge Marie wanted to use in the valley we were descended into was not put in yet, so she and the rest of the group hiked back up to us and we took a detour up river to a place where the bridge was in and crossed over the river. We continued downhill and had our box lunches in a little hamlet called Le Champel.  The rain had stopped for our lunch. Afte lunch we started again and continued down to the bottom of the next valley where Les Contamines is located. As we got to the bottom, we were still some ways from the hotel and the rain started up again. At one of the crossings the trail had with the roads, we met the van and finished the last couple of km in the van while the rest of the group trudged on in the rain. David took the hike and took an hour longer to get to the hotel than we did.
