Alaska July/August 2007
Aug 7 - Half the group to the train back to Anchorage - Other half
drove and flew over Denali
Still Under Construction
The original plan for this day was to van back to Anchorage. About half
the group though opted to take the train in. We stayed with the van as
we were not sure we would get to the airport in time (we would have as
it turns out).
The weather in the morning was the usual overcast so we figured that
the trip was bascially over. We were wrong. The mountain range that
Denali is part of runs more or less on an east-west line. We started
out in the morning on the north side of the range. When we got to the
south side of the range, the weather was basically clear. As we drove,
we had many view points of the mountian. As all of our flights were in
the late evening, we detoured to the town of Talkeenta and caught a
flight-seeing trip over the mountain. We took the flight that did not
land on the glacier but flew over the mountain. On the north side of
the mountain, the park was still socked in by low clouds.
I had my GPS on for the flight, and here is the track we flew:
First at low magnifcation:

and then zooming in:

The pilot did an excellent job of making sure that both sides of the
plane could see all of the sights. This gps track is about 195 miles.
