Aug 2 - Valdez to Matanuska Glacier

Today, we broke camp for an all day van ride to a campground by the Matanuska Glacier. Along the way we crossed Thompson Pass, stopped at the Worthington Glacier for a short hike, then with incredible luck on weather, stopped at an overlook of the Wrangell Mountains in the Wrangell St. Elias National Park. We had lunch there and did some photography. After that we continued on to the the glacier area. The original plan was to hike a feature called "Lion's Head" with Kyle going on by himself to set up camp. Marina and I, however, chose not to join the group. Our hiking styles are different, unless we are doing a hike just for exercise, we hike slowly on trails we have never been on , looking all around us. After being told so many times to keep together due to danger from meeting bears, we decided not to hike with the group anymore. Good thing we did as well, as the campsite we were at for the next two days is not one that takes reservations. One of the sites they wanted was already taken. Marina and I staked out an alternative. By the time the hikers were done, the campsite was full.

Here is an overview of our drive

You can see from the scale it was a long day

From the Worthington Glacier

The trail sometimes was on a narrow ridge. The parking lot can seen middle left.

The Worthington Glacier

Since Marina and I were not hiking fast, we thought about what we were taking

This set of pictures is looking at the Wrangell Range with Willow Lake in the foreground
This is a stitched picture. Looking at (from left to right) Mt. Drum, Mt. Sanford, Mt. Wrangell and Mt. Blackburn
Playing with Google Earth and starting from the location 61 46.733N, 145 10.826W, it was easy to identify the peaks

We then drove to the visitor center of the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and took some more pictures, mostly of Mt. Drum

Finally at the campsite some Monkshood
