Aug 1 - Valdez - All day kayak to Shoup Glacier

In the morning, before going into town to kayak, we took a small hike up the road from the camp site to the Valdez Glacier. This is shown on the map in red on the right hand side.
Using maps.google.com, the lake at the end of the glacier is in the center of the picture below

Our campsite, and I think this was the best of the four

On the way out to the glacier, one of the campsites was roped off as a Bald Eagle had made his/her home there.

and at the glacier itself

Then in later in the morning, we went into town where we were outfitted for the kayaking. This included getting skirts put on so that we could keep water out of the kayak. The kayaks were all two seaters and had rudders. We then took a motor boat over to the entrance of Shoop Bay and kayaked to the glacier. As the map above shows, the glacier has retreated quite a bit since the map was made.

We were dropped off on the east side (right hand side of this map) just inside the little hook of land that juts out, paddled through the the gray area in the middle, although at rising tide this was mostly under water, and the current took us through. We beached on the west side, had lunch, and spent some time going up to the edge of the glacier, then paddled back and were picked up by the same launch.

On the way out on the launch, you could see a trail that would allow you to hike from town out to the bay,
